This excerpt was a speech given by US Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy was a Senator dedicated to getting rid of communism in American society.
The fear of communism spread was a real one for America during the 1950's. This was due to the emergence of the Soviet Union as a global superpower after World War II. The United States, at this time, felt that communist regimes suppressed citizens rights. Therefor, the US wanted to stop communism from spreading into the US. This speech was just the beginning of McCarthy's wild accusations against citizens in the US in regards to their communist beliefs or ties. These allegations would result in several trials in which American citizens had their lives ruined due to these accusations.
