Quick question: When you promote to Specialist, you lose any Solider Abilities you took, but do you retain any dots in Attributes you may have already bought, even if they’re outside the normal Specialist dots?

No, you don’t lose (all) the Soldier abilities you took. You keep two, if more than two you keep two and lose the rest :

However, as a promoting Soldier, you can keep your Soldier-specific abilities only if you spend from your two Veteran slots to keep them. If you have more than two special abilities, choose which
ones you keep.
The dots in Actions and Attributes, you keep them all.
You must have the required Specialist dots to promote, but you can keep all the others.
